Rebuilding lost jawbone so that an implant has enough solid bone to hold it.
Bone around a tooth begins to shrink as soon as the tooth is lost, and keeps shrinking for as long as the gap stays empty. A graft replaces what has gone: material is packed into the deficient area and covered with a membrane, and over the following months your own bone grows through and replaces it. Once it has, an implant can be placed in bone that will hold.

A graft is preparation, not a treatment in itself. Small defects are often grafted in the same appointment as the extraction or the implant; larger ones are grafted first and left to mature before the implant goes in.
A 3D cone-beam scan measures the height and width of the bone in the exact place the implant is planned. This decides how much graft is needed and whether the implant can go in at the same time.
Small defects are usually filled with prepared granular material and a resorbable membrane. Larger ones may need a block graft, or bone taken from elsewhere in your own jaw. We explain which applies to you before you agree to anything.
Performed under local anaesthesia, with sedation on request. The area is opened, the graft placed and covered with a membrane, and the gum closed over it. A single-site graft takes about 30–60 minutes.
The graft is gradually replaced by your own bone over roughly four to nine months, depending on its size. The implant is placed once the scan shows the bone has matured.
Most cases use prepared, sterilised granular material that acts as a scaffold for your own bone to grow into. For larger defects a block of your own bone may be taken from elsewhere in the jaw. We tell you which is planned beforehand.
If enough of your own bone remains to hold the implant steady, yes — the graft fills in around it. If not, the graft heals first and the implant follows once the bone has matured.
It is uncommon, and when it happens it is usually partial. The area is cleaned and regrafted after healing. Not smoking, keeping the site clean and avoiding pressure are what make the difference.
