Overview

Because the implant stands on its own, neighbouring healthy teeth are not filed down the way they are for a conventional bridge. It also transmits chewing forces into the bone, which helps slow the bone loss that normally follows tooth loss.

Who is it for?

• One or more missing teeth, with healthy remaining gums
• A conventional bridge would mean cutting down healthy neighbouring teeth
• A lower denture that will not stay in place while eating or speaking
• A tooth that cannot be saved and is planned for extraction

How we do it

1. 01

   Examination and imaging

   Clinical examination, panoramic X-ray and, where needed, a 3D cone-beam scan to measure bone height, width and the position of nerves and sinuses.

2. 02

   Digital planning

   The implant position is planned on the scan before surgery, so the final crown and the bite guide where the implant goes — not the other way round.

3. 03

   Placement

   The implant is placed under local anaesthesia. Most single implants take 30–60 minutes. Sedation can be arranged for anxious patients.

4. 04

   Healing and the crown

   After healing, an abutment is fitted and the final crown is made from an impression or a digital scan and cemented or screwed in place.

After the treatment

• Mild swelling and tenderness for two to three days is normal; cold packs and the prescribed medication keep it manageable.
• Soft food for the first few days, and no smoking during the healing period — smoking is the single biggest risk factor for implant failure.
• Brushing, interdental brushes and regular check-ups protect the gum around the implant for the long term.
