Zirconium Crowns

Metal-free crowns and bridges milled from zirconia — strong enough for back teeth, translucent enough for front teeth.

Zirconia is a ceramic with very high fracture resistance. Because there is no metal substructure, there is no grey line at the gum margin and no metallic shadow through the ceramic — the main aesthetic complaints about older metal-ceramic crowns.

Zirconium Crowns

Overview

Crowns are milled by CAD/CAM from a digital or conventional impression, which makes the fit highly repeatable. Different zirconia grades are used for different jobs: more translucent material at the front, higher-strength material at the back.

Who is it for?

  • A heavily broken-down or root-treated tooth that needs full coverage
  • A bridge to replace one or more missing teeth
  • Old metal-ceramic crowns with a visible grey margin
  • A known nickel or metal sensitivity

How we do it

  1. 01

    Assessment and shade

The tooth, gum and bite are assessed and the shade is chosen in daylight against the neighbouring teeth.

  2. 02

    Preparation

The tooth is prepared under local anaesthesia and a digital or conventional impression is taken. A temporary crown is fitted.

  3. 03

    Production

The crown is designed on the digital model and milled from a zirconia block, then layered or stained and glazed.

  4. 04

    Try-in and cementation

Fit, contact points, shade and bite are checked before final cementation.

After the treatment

  • Mild gum tenderness and cold sensitivity for a few days is normal.
  • Clean the margin at the gum with floss or an interdental brush — that margin is where problems start.
  • A night guard is recommended if you grind, to protect both the crown and the opposing teeth.

Frequently asked questions

Zirconia avoids the grey margin and the metal substructure, and is the default choice for the smile line. Metal-ceramic still has uses, but zirconia has largely replaced it.

Yes — high-strength zirconia grades are specifically used for back teeth and long-span bridges.

Recession is driven by gum health and hygiene, not by the material. A well-fitting margin and daily interdental cleaning are what keep the gum stable.
