That is why whitening always follows an examination. Decay and gum inflammation are treated first, and existing restorations in the smile line are noted — because after whitening, they may need replacing to match the new shade.

Who is it for?

• Teeth that have yellowed gradually with age
• Staining from coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco
• A wish to lighten the smile before a wedding or another event
• Anyone whose gums and teeth are healthy and who has realistic expectations

How we do it

1. 01

   Check-up and cleaning

   Cavities and gum inflammation are treated and calculus removed. Some of what looks like discolouration is surface staining that cleaning alone removes.

2. 02

   Shade record

   The starting shade is recorded with a guide and photographs, so the change can be measured rather than guessed.

3. 03

   Whitening

   In-clinic: the gums are isolated and a high-concentration gel is applied in sessions. At home: custom trays and a lower-concentration gel used for a set time each day.

4. 04

   Review

   The result is checked, sensitivity is managed, and any restoration that no longer matches is planned for replacement.

After the treatment

• Temporary sensitivity to cold is common for one to three days and settles on its own; a desensitising toothpaste helps.
• Avoid strongly coloured food and drink and tobacco for the first 48 hours, while the enamel is most absorbent.
• The result is not permanent — depending on habits, a top-up is usually needed after one to two years.
